CALM Coaching (developed by Stress-Less Fitness) use digital tech to detect your body’s stress and recovery levels using your heart rate. Using our stress detection watch and brainwave monitor, we help to tell you when your mind is calm or active, and when your body is stressed or recovered.
Approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year. In England, 1 in 6 people report experiencing a common mental health problem (such as anxiety and depression) in any given week.
This stat is here to show that if you are experiencing mental health problems, you are not alone.
Being someone who has experienced mental health problems, it can be hard to tell people around you that you are going through a hard time. We would rather dig our head in the sand, try to forget it and immerse ourselves into something to help us forget.
But I found that it never works. The problem only gets worse and worse. In order to take control, we need to face the problem head on (preferably in a way where we can keep it relatively discreet – the British way)
One of the most common issues around mental health is stress. Chronic Stress (stress over the limits of what the body can take for a prolonged time) creates physiological and hormonal changes which are detrimental to physical and mental wellbeing.
Mental health can therefore be a symptom of an overload of stress to the body. It is therefore important to keep a good balance when it comes to stress vs down-time.
There are many forms of stress on the body (not all that are bad):
- Nutritional – eating too much, starving yourself
- Mental – over-thinking, not able to focus and concentrate
- Emotional – over emotional, not able to express emotions well
- Physical – too much exercise, not enough exercise
- Temperature – too hot, too cold
These are just to name a few. There are extremes to each form and each extreme causes the body to become physiologically stressed.
Before, we would never be able to know whether we were physiologically stressed or had enough rest and recovery. But now there is a device, available with a Stress-Less programme called CALM Coaching, that detects the physiological stress in the body from collecting and aggregates data from your heartbeat. What it is specifically measuring is heart rate variability.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is the physiological phenomenon of variation in the time interval between heartbeats. It is measured by the variation in the beat-to-beat interval. The greater the HRV score, the greater amount of resources (energy) the body can utilise. This means the energy your body has outweighs the load of physiological stress your body is under. On the other side, the lower the HRV score, the physiological stress is overloading the body’s resources to recover.
Having this with the convenience of a stylish watch gives you the discreetness to monitor your body’s ability to recover from stress so you always are in control of your stress, your body and your life.
We brought this into the CALM Coaching programme as we want people to have an objective view of how their bodies are coping with stress.
We also use it as a measuring tool to see how an individual is improving with the adaptations from our Stress-Less Optimal Stress Coach.
What is CALM Coaching?
CALM Coaching is a programme developed to build mental and physical fitness. Its key message is to gain control of mind using stress reduction and stress resilience building.
For the stress reduction, we have a device which measures the activity of the mind when meditating. From this we can see and improve the meditation practice/mental relaxation.
For stress resilience, we use a form of exercise adapted by Stress-Less Fitness called Stress Adaptive Exercises. With this, we use the physical stress of exercise and train our body to respond better to stress by improving how quickly we recover from stress. We will therefore be able to firstly, take on more of a load of stress and secondly, be able to recover more effectively from stress.
Our stress detection watch is powered by Suunto and gives you real time feedback on whether your body is ‘Stressed’, ‘Active’ i.e exercising, ‘Inactive’ or ‘Recovering’. We use this to create a tailor made bespoke plan.
